Athletics Ontario Board of Directors Opportunity

Athletics Ontario (AO) is the not-for-profit sport governing body in the province of Ontario and a member branch of Athletics Canada. AO is responsible for the sanctioning and support of over 200 athletic competitions (track and field, road running, cross country and race walking) each year to athletes of all ages.

With nearly 130 member clubs, 6200+ registered athletes, coaches, and volunteers, and access to over 10,000 participants in our Championship events, our association is athlete-centred, volunteer-based, and community-driven. Learn more at www.athleticsontario.ca

The board is currently focused on succession planning for the board chair role. In 2024 a priority in the nomination process is identifying individuals who are interested in a board leadership role in the near future.

DESCRIPTION
The Athletic Ontario Board provides strategic leadership to the association by committing to excellence in governance while supporting AO’s mission, vision and values. AO seeks a mix of experience, expertise and individual competency that will assist the Board with fulfilling its governance role while focusing on the future of the association. Relevant core competencies include:

The board will comprise a team of leaders with experience and skill in the following areas:
● Legal/Risk Management /Governance
● Human Resources
● Accounting/Audit/Finance
● Strategy Planning/Development
● Marketing/Brand Development/Communications
● Community/Member Relations
● Funding Diversification/Partnership Development
● IT/E-Commerce
● Public Policy/Government Relations
● Sector Knowledge

RESPONSIBILITIES
The Board is responsible for the highest level of decision-making, assisting in developing the organizational vision, and defining the parameters within which the association will carry out its work.

Board members serve a three-year term and are eligible for re-election for additional consecutive terms. Directors meet in person and in virtual meetings, quarterly or when required. Board members are also required to participate on one or more AO Board Committees. Committee meetings are typically held
monthly or as required.

Board members serve on a volunteer basis and without remuneration, except for travel and accommodation costs in relation to Board members’ duties.

The Board chair is selected by the board. Prospective board members should identify their interest in being considered for the board chair role.

Successful candidates must be a member of Athletics Ontario or become one immediately following the election.

Selected applicants can expect to be interviewed by one or more members of the Nomination committee. Following a review of all applicants, the Nomination committee will recommend a slate for election by the membership at the Annual General Meeting (AGM). The recommended slate will contain incumbent board members and/or new applicants. If at the AGM the slate is not approved, all applicants in attendance at the meeting may be presented for consideration if they so choose.
